Suggestions for shoring up Exchange 2003 and/or migrating to 2010?

Currently have an Exchange 2003 Enterprise SP2 infrastructure in Windows 2003 AD domain.

There is just one mail server and it only has a RAID 5 configuration.  Lately we've been taking a performance hit and are looking to: 1) increase current performance, if possible  2) try to capacity plan and move away from 2003 to at least Exchange 2010  3) increase redundancy and/or load balancing, etc

 - My first question is if there is a way to introduce a second Exchange 2003 server OR introduce a new Exchange 2010 server into the mix?  Can 2003 and 2010 coexistence in the same domain so that I can start moving people into the new server?

- Second question is what is required in order to run Exchange 2010?  Will I need at least Windows 2008 R2 64-bit for the Exchange OS and a Windows 2003/2008 AD domain?  What are the best practice hardware requirements?

- Last question is how can I increase the fault tolerance, redundancy, etc of the Exchange 2003 server I have now?  How can I increase the fault tolerance, redundancy of Exchange 2010?
